Personal & Career Journey

1.  What inspired you to become an engineer?

My journey into engineering was sparked by a deep fascination with math and physics during high school. I found satisfaction in tackling complex problems and was captivated by the idea that engineering could be a powerful tool for creating solutions in our world. I wanted to contribute to meaningful change and help build a sustainable future.

2.  What has been the most rewarding part of your engineering journey?

The most rewarding aspect of my engineering journey has been witnessing the tangible impact of my work on people’s lives. It’s incredibly fulfilling to see projects I’ve dedicated time and effort to become integral parts of communities. This sense of purpose drives me to continue striving for excellence in my field.

3.  Can you share a project you’ve worked on that had a significant positive impact on sustainability or society?

One of the most impactful projects I’ve worked on is the Integrated Waste Management Facilities Phase 1 (IWMF1). This initiative is designed to significantly reduce the volume of municipal solid waste by over 90%, which will greatly decrease the demand for landfills. A key feature of the project is the energy from waste incineration process, which not only meets the facility’s electricity needs but also generates waste-to-energy (WtE) electricity that can be supplied to the public power grid. This project not only promotes sustainable waste management but also contributes to a cleaner energy future, demonstrating how engineering can effectively address environmental challenges while benefiting society.

Engineering & Sustainable Development

4.  How do you see engineering contributing to sustainable development and tackling global challenges?

Engineering plays a crucial role in addressing global challenges and promoting sustainable development. By designing more sustainable and resilient infrastructures, engineers can significantly mitigate. For example, in the IWMF1 project, we are incorporating seawalls that provide essential coastal protection for critical infrastructure. These innovative designs enhance the overall resilience of our built environment. As engineers, we have the opportunity to create solutions that not only meet current needs but also ensure a sustainable future for generations to come.

5.  In your opinion, what is the most urgent sustainability issue that engineers should focus on today?

All of the sustainability issues are interlinked and equally critical. However, if I had to prioritise, I believe climate change should be our primary focus. Its effects are far-reaching and have long-lasting impacts on our environment, economies, and societies. Addressing climate change requires a holistic approach, integrating renewable energy solutions and improving water management practices.

Innovation & Future of Engineering

6.  How is technology changing the way engineering solutions are developed?

Technology, particularly digital transformation, is revolutionising the engineering landscape by significantly enhancing efficiency in both design and construction processes. Tools like Building Information Modelling (BIM) allow for more accurate planning and visualisation, which can reduce costs and streamline project timelines. Additionally, advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) enable better predictive analytics and decision-making, optimising resource allocation and risk management.

7.  What innovations in engineering do you think will have the most significant impact on building a more sustainable future?

In my opinion, smart infrastructure holds the potential to significantly advance our efforts toward a more sustainable future. By integrating technology with traditional infrastructure, we can enhance planning, construction, and management processes in ways that promote sustainability. Smart infrastructure enables real-time data collection and analysis, allowing for more efficient resource usage and better decision-making.

8.  What do you think are the biggest challenges engineers will face in the next decade?

One of the biggest challenges engineers will face in the next decade is keeping pace with the rapidly changing environmental landscape and embracing new technologies, engineers will need to develop innovative solutions that are not only effective but also sustainable.

Additionally, the integration of advanced technologies into engineering practices will require continuous learning and adaptation. Engineers must be prepared to navigate the complexities of these technologies while ensuring they align with ethical standards and societal needs.

Advice & Inspiration

9.  What advice would you give to young aspiring engineers who want to make a difference in the world?

My advice to young aspiring engineers is to remain curious and to embrace innovation, even in a traditionally structured profession. The engineering field is constantly evolving, and being open to new ideas and technologies is essential for making a meaningful impact. It’s important to cultivate a mindset of continuous learning, as this will empower us to tackle the complex challenges that lie ahead.

10.  What skills or mindsets do you think are essential for future engineers in addressing sustainability challenges?

First and foremost, staying updated on the latest global challenges is crucial. Understanding the evolving nature of issues such as climate change and resource scarcity will enable engineers to develop relevant and effective solutions.

Additionally, an openness to new technologies is vital. As the world continues to change rapidly, embracing innovative tools and methodologies will allow engineers to adapt and respond effectively to emerging challenges.

Critical thinking and problem-solving skills are also essential as they empower engineers to analyse complex situations and devise creative solutions.

11.  How can companies and governments better support engineers in creating sustainable solutions?

Governments and companies can play a pivotal role in supporting engineers by providing comprehensive training and access to essential tools that foster the development of sustainable solutions.

Investing in educational programs that focus on sustainability and emerging technologies will equip engineers with the knowledge and skills needed to tackle current and future challenges.

Additionally, companies and governments can facilitate collaboration by creating platforms for knowledge sharing, networking, and partnerships among engineers, researchers, and industry leaders.

As engineers, we have the opportunity to create solutions that not only meet current needs but also ensure a sustainable future for generations to come.
