Interview with Zoe Mok, Division Controller

Zoe, a Division Controller at Asia Infrastructure Solutions, is an experienced CPA in the built industry. In this interview, she discusses career progression opportunities and the significance of maintaining a healthy work-life balance for women.

Q1. Why do you think it is important to celebrate International Women’s Day?

It gives us an opportunity to honour the success and achievements of all women. A simple thank you and expressing appreciation to all women around us goes a long way and help others feel good.

Q2. Is career advancement challenging for women in your profession?

The accounting profession is becoming more diverse albeit the progress is slow. Women might have to work harder to earn a well-deserved seat at the table and an equal voice on issues in the workplace. There is certainly work to be done in organisations to ensure gender diversity and equality. I believe in a Chinese proverb that translates to “Seats are always reserved for the capable”. I reckon investment in women to level up any imbalances caused by different cultures and background, is the right thing to do from a moral and fiscal perspective.

Q3. Many female employees are in the “sandwich generation”. What tips do you have for women to achieve a healthy work-life balance?

Rather than seeking work-life balance, I would pursue life-work balance. Life always comes first because without being ‘alive’, I will not be able do great things. I strongly encourage women to take care of their mind, emotions and wellbeing. It is the heart that brings energy and life to what we want to focus on.

Q4. How do you encourage female employees to not give up?

Accountants have a unique role to provide professional services to clients and businesses to make critical decisions. We should always uphold the work ethics and make sound judgement in all accounting activities. In order to be a successful and reliable business partner, it is important for us to keep up to date with changes in the accounting world as well as improving our competencies to do our job as best as we could. So do not give up on learning and development throughout the career journey!

Q5. What advice would you give to young women entering this profession / organisation?

Be confident, humble and show gratitude in your daily interactions with anyone you encounter. It certainly unlocks doors to bring you to great success.

I strongly encourage women to take care of their mind, emotions and wellbeing. It is the heart that brings energy and life to what we want to focus on.
