Having successfully delivered award-winning infrastructure and construction projects, SP Chin imparts valuable insights into the mindset and principles essential for success.
In the Spotlight
As the Executive Director for Rail & Transit, I am responsible for overseeing rail projects and project management. I am a Structural Engineer by training and have nearly thirty years of experience in dealing with infrastructure and construction projects. I have worked on railways, tunnels, airport and cruise terminals, buildings, and offshore structures. I have imparted knowledge through teaching lecture courses on Project Management for more than five years.
I am also involved in most major project pursuits at Asia Infrastructure Solutions (AIS), from strategising team collaborations to overseeing technical proposals, assigning the right team members, and working hard to secure project opportunities.
On a day-to-day basis, I spend most of my time:
Most of my projects are unique and one-of-a-kind. The most unusual project I have been involved with – dating back to 2019 – was the Investigation of Hung Hom Station. We started as an Independent Reviewer for MTR, but eventually, we assisted MTR and their original designer to successfully verify the adequacy of the present design (with a different and think-outside-the-box approach) with minimum strengthened works. Hence, the second section (Phase 2) extending the East Rail line from Hung Hom in Kowloon to Admiralty on Hong Kong Island via a newly constructed station at Exhibition Centre could be opened to the public in May 2022. The team managed to complete the entire exercise within three months.
Opportunities are always around us. Only the brave ones get to see them.
Never say no to anything. Cherish every opportunity you can have when you are young and energised. There is nothing to be afraid of – be afraid not to try. The only way to broaden your experience is by trying everything you can be exposed to.
Do not leave anything on the table. If you do not take the opportunity, someone else would.
A perfect weekend will be free from emails or phone calls, allowing the opportunity to enjoy quality time with family fully. It does not have to be an expensive trip; merely a meal, gathering and sharing each other’s stories throughout the week will be perfect.
I practice Tai Chi and martial arts regularly. I believe having a healthy body is very important for overcoming many challenges.
The piece of advice that I would give is always to work diligently. God rewards those who work hard. No matter how complex the matter is, there is always a solution. Sometimes, it can be a stupid solution; sometimes, it is an intelligent solution, but it will still solve the issue. You win if you can learn to evolve all solutions to be smart, intelligent, and sustainable.
Seek out your mentors – they are your guardians in life. Learn from both their best and their worst attributes. Cherish the best and be wary of the worst. I have been fortunate enough to meet my mentors and get to know them.
