The project comprises four new interchanges along the existing N-S Expressway, completed under four separate appointments to provide ingress and egress for surrounding towns and developments. The trumpet and diamond interchanges were designed complete with toll plazas, facilities building, and the necessary links to existing roads.
The interchanges are the later additions to the completed expressway. The additions were necessary due to new developments along the expressway and as part of later phase development as stipulated in the concession agreement. Additional toll revenue due to better connectivity is an important consideration for this privatised highway.
As the lead consultant, we undertook all design in Civil, Structural and Geotechnical works and managed the sub-consultants: MEP, Architects, Land Surveyor, Town Planner, Quantity Surveyor, Landscape Architect and Environmental Consultants.
Highway interchanges are an essential part of modern transportation systems. They improve traffic flow, provide better connectivity, reduce congestion for both users and non-users, and generate toll revenues for the highway concessionaire.
Different sites have different challenges, some technical, and some related to land issues. At Kubang Pasu, we successfully completed the whole design and construction within three months, a fraction of the usual two years. At Alor Pongsu, the soft ground was the biggest technical challenge, where innovative ground treatment methods were successfully used, e.g. prefabricated vertical drains, stone columns and piled embankment, resulting in a very cost-effective solution for the Client. At Serenia, the coordination with various stakeholders was the main challenge; however, we rose to the challenge, and all jobs were completed on time and within budget.
