Q1. Could you share your background and what inspired you to pursue a career in your field?
I grew up in a tranquil countryside village, which instilled in me a deep appreciation for nature and the environment. During my studies in the UK, I experienced the notorious smog in the city, which heightened my awareness of environmental issues. This experience inspired me to pursue a career in the environmental field, aiming to create sustainable solutions that enhance our quality of life. Shortly after graduating from the University of Nottingham in Environmental Engineering, I returned to Hong Kong and embarked on my career in environmental consultancy.
Q2. What are your primary responsibilities at AIS, and what does a typical day look like for you?
As an environmental consultant, I manage the environmental aspects of various projects, collaborating with my team, which includes specialists in areas like noise and contamination. My role involves providing guidance on environmental issues and compliance requirements, ensuring that regulatory standards are met and integrating sustainable practices whenever possible. Our contributions not only enhance project outcomes but also promote a culture of environmental awareness across the teams. Each day is dynamic, filled with teamwork and problem-solving to create sustainable solutions.
Q3. What do you enjoy most about working here?
I feel fortunate to work alongside dedicated and talented colleagues who cultivate a collaborative culture. The support and shared commitment to enhancing project outcomes create a positive atmosphere where we all feel valued and motivated to contribute.
Q4. Could you discuss any challenges you have faced as a woman in your field and how you navigated them?
When I started my career, the environmental field was still gaining traction. I navigated this by confidently sharing my knowledge and building strong relationships with both colleagues and clients. My aim has always been to foster an inclusive environment where diverse perspectives are valued. I believe that our collective efforts can make a positive impact on our work and the industry as a whole.
Q5. How do you believe your work is driving change within the organisation or community?
While environmental considerations may not always be the primary focus of every project, they are essential to the success of all initiatives. By collaborating with project teams, we ensure that our projects not only meet their goals but also contribute positively to the environment. This holistic approach helps drive meaningful change within the organisation and the community.
Q6. What specific achievements or milestones are you most proud of in your career so far?
I am particularly proud of the numerous environmental studies I have conducted and led throughout my career. These projects encompass a variety of areas, including roads, sewer systems, residential developments, and leisure facilities. Witnessing these initiatives come to life has been incredibly fulfilling and highlights the impact of our work on sustainable development.
Q7. In what ways do you believe we can accelerate action towards gender equality in the male-dominated engineering industry?
I believe we can promote an inclusive culture by encouraging women to pursue their interests in engineering. If companies implement diversity policies that enhance representation in both hiring and leadership roles, it would create a more equitable environment. Additionally, fostering open dialogue can help remove biases and ensure that the contributions of all individuals are valued. This collective effort is essential for driving meaningful change in the industry.
Q8. What hobbies or interests do you enjoy outside of work?
Outside of work, I enjoy cooking, playing tennis, and playing the piano—especially when my sons supervise me! These activities bring me joy and allow me to unwind while spending quality time with my family.
Q9. How do you prioritise self-care and personal well-being amidst the challenges of a dynamic career?
I prioritise self-care by establishing clear boundaries between work and personal time. Engaging in regular mindfulness practices and spending quality time with loved ones helps me recharge and maintain a healthy balance in my life. This approach is essential for navigating the challenges of a dynamic career.
Q10. What’s a fun fact about you?
One of my favourite TV shows is “Friends,” which I enjoyed during the 90’s. It was a staple of my weekend entertainment during my university years, and it still brings a smile to my face every time I watch it again.
