Q1. What does “Advancing Rail & Transit Infrastructure for Sustainable Cities” mean to you?
It is about connecting people, not just places. Rail and transit networks serve as the arteries of a city — facilitating efficient movement within communities, reducing carbon emissions, and influencing urban development. When we talk about sustainable infrastructure, we are really focusing on improving the quality of life for future generations.
Q2. What personally motivates you about working in the rail and transit sector?
I have always believed that great infrastructure connects people in ways that go beyond mere transportation. Every new railway line or interchange we construct significantly improves daily life — allowing someone to get home more quickly, making a community more accessible, and fostering inclusively within a city. That sense of purpose keeps me moving forward. It is incredibly fulfilling to know that our work contributes to creating cities where people can live, work, and thrive sustainably.
Q3. AIS has been involved in many landmark rail projects. What are some that stand out?
I have been fortunate to participate in several transformative rail projects across Asia, delivering metro and high-speed rail networks that are reshaping urban mobility.
- In Hong Kong, our teams are involved in the MTR Hung Shui Kiu station project that supports new rail development under the Northern Metropolis vision — one of the region’s most ambitious city-building initiatives. We are also contributing to the Smart and Green Mass Transit System project in East Kowloon, a key component of Hong Kong’s smart mobility agenda that aims to enhance efficiency and sustainability.
- In Malaysia, we are part of the Penang LRT project, which will strengthen regional connectivity and drive economic growth.
- In Singapore, our engineers continue to play a key role in the expansion of the MRT network, a global benchmark for integrated and sustainable urban transportation.
Q4. You’ve worked on major rail projects across Asia. Is there one that holds a special place for you?
Each project tells its own unique story, reflecting the essence of teamwork, perseverance, and the transformative power of effective engineering. Seeing how our work improves accessibility and mobility for communities is deeply rewarding. Knowing that what we create not only serves a functional purpose but also fosters connection and growth in society keeps me motivated to deliver excellence in every endeavour.
Q5. How do you see the future of rail and transit evolving?
The next wave of progress will be propelled by digital transformation — leveraging data, AI, automation, and smart asset management. These technologies will enhance the safety, efficiency, and sustainability of our rail systems. AIS and GISI Consulting Group are committed to this future, merging innovation with decades of hands-on expertise.
Q6. What makes AIS and the wider GISI Consulting Group stand out in this space?
We bring together extensive local knowledge with global expertise, from planning and design to cost management and project implementation. Within the GISI Consulting Group, our team of 15,000 professionals across Asia and beyond work collaboratively to deliver world-class infrastructure that advances sustainability and innovation.
Q7. How do you nurture collaboration across teams and regions in such complex, multi-country projects?
Collaboration is at the heart of everything we do. Our teams across Asia each bring unique strengths — local insight, technical excellence, and creativity. My role is to connect these elements and foster an environment where people feel empowered to share ideas and challenge conventions. That is how innovation occurs —when everyone feels they are part of a larger narrative.
Q8. Outside of work, what do you enjoy doing?
I like traveling for relaxation and to explore the cultures and lifestyles of people in various places. As a rail enthusiast, I often find myself observing railway station design and transit systems during my trips! And, of course, nothing compares to spending quality time with family and friends to recharge after a busy week.
Q9. What advice would you give to young professionals interested in this field?
Stay curious, adaptable, and open to learning. The rail and transit sector is evolving fast, from engineering innovation to environmental objectives. Those who embrace collaboration and a commitment to continuous learning will play a vital role in shaping the sustainable cities of the future.
