Interview with Yan Ng, Engineer I

Q1. What inspired you to pursue a career in engineering, and why did you choose the geotechnical sector?

Since childhood, I’ve been fascinated by megastructures, from ancient buildings to modern infrastructure. This passion led me to pursue a degree in Civil Engineering. Among the three main sectors—Structural, Civil, and Geotechnical, I found geotechnical engineering to be the most intriguing. It presents unique challenges, as you never know what geological conditions lie beneath the surface, adding a layer of mystery to the work.

Q2. What is the day-to-day of your role like?

I work as a project coordinator for several slope maintenance agreements. My role involves managing contract services for slope maintenance and improvement projects, as well as overseeing the inspection, design, and execution of works for man-made features within public housing estates in Hong Kong. My primary duties include coordinating communication among all stakeholders, planning and monitoring project activities and expenditures, and exploring opportunities to implement innovative solutions in slope maintenance.

Q3. What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced in your role, particularly in the context of geotechnical engineering?

One of my biggest challenges is balancing the desire to incorporate advanced technology in geotechnical engineering with project budget constraints and cybersecurity policies. While many innovative ideas could enhance accuracy and efficiency, the limitations on funding often prevent us from fully exploring these options. My challenge is to set reasonable expectations for all stakeholders while navigating differing opinions, especially when advocating for the best outcomes for the client within the project’s cost and scope.

Q4. What’s the behind-the-scenes aspect of geotechnical engineering that most people wouldn’t expect?

One of the behind-the-scenes aspects of geotechnical engineering is the challenge of overcoming site constraints, such as land lot boundaries, existing structures, and nearby sensitive receivers. In Hong Kong, these factors complicate many projects. While our current technology can address most challenges, executing work in a densely populated city requires careful consideration to minimise disruptions. Detailed planning prior to construction, implementing precautionary measures, and managing public relations are just as critical as the technical aspects of geotechnical projects.

Q5. How has working at AIS contributed to your professional growth?

Working at AIS has significantly contributed to my professional growth by providing opportunities to explore various engineering aspects and interact with stakeholders from diverse backgrounds. Building on my experience with projects like the Landslip Prevention and Mitigation Programme and site formation for public housing estates and private hotels, AIS has further deepened my understanding of public and private sector demands.

Q6.  What do you enjoy most about working here?

What I enjoy most about working here is the flexible working hours, which significantly reduce transportation stress. Additionally, the friendly office culture fosters open communication across all company levels, strengthening the bond between staff and management.

Q7. What are your personal and professional goals for the future in engineering?

My personal and professional goal is to obtain chartered status as a professional engineer. In recent years, I have primarily focused on managing projects due to unforeseen circumstances, which caused me to overlook my aspirations. However, with our growing project team, I am excited to refocus on my journey toward becoming a chartered engineer.

Q8. What advice would you give young engineers just starting their careers in the industry?

My advice is to cultivate curiosity, as it is essential for personal and professional growth. When assigned a task, take the initiative to conduct background research and review available documents and ordinances. You’ll be surprised at how much practical knowledge and interesting stories can be gleaned from the recorded correspondence of authorities.

Q9. What are some of your interests or hobbies that help you maintain a work-life balance outside of work?

I enjoy engaging in empty-headed activities, such as unplanned outings or watching random live streams and videos, to maintain a work-life balance. These activities help me discover new things and reset my mind from the demands of work that often require extensive planning and consideration.

Q10. What is something about you that may surprise your colleagues, or that they may not know?

My colleagues might assume I am very passionate about computers because I have advanced Microsoft Office skills, such as creating macros with VBA. In reality, I’m just looking for ways to avoid repetitive tasks and save time. It’s somewhat amusing that my skills have encouraged others to reach out for assistance with their computer problems!

I believe that by focusing on effective engineering practices, we can create more resilient infrastructures. At AIS, I strive to integrate innovative geotechnical solutions that not only address immediate challenges but also enhance the overall quality of our projects. My commitment to excellence drives my work and inspires collaboration among our team.
Yan Ng is an Engineer with 8 years practical experience in Geotechnical Engineering. Prior to her joining AIS, she had an internship with DSD during which she estimated construction material quantities. Yan is experienced in design of slope stability assessment and design of stability improvement works and site formation. She has practical knowledge of design of excavation and lateral support (ELS). Her site experience includes supervision of Ground Investigation works and working as TCP of grade T3 in RGE, RSE and AP stream for slope upgrading works and site formation works. Yan has assisted in the management of several contracts under both private and public projects in Hong Kong.
