Interview with Roona Arunkumar, Project Manager

Q1. What’s the day-to-day of your role like?

As a Project Manager, I regularly engage and collaborate with clients, consultants, and contractors to ensure smooth project progress. My key focus being to keep everyone aligned with deadlines and deliverables. I also organise and attend both online and on-site meetings and manage key communications through emails. In addition, I also handle all the documentations required. While these tasks are part of my daily routine, each project and client presents unique opportunities, allowing me to tailor my approach and strategy for optimal results.

Q2. How did you first learn about Asia Infrastructure Solutions (AIS)?

I have always heard about the company while working in the industry, and happened to have a friend who worked here and spoke highly of it. One day, I came across job posting for a Project Manager role on LinkedIn and with a little help from my friend for a referral, I applied, went through the interview process, and successfully landed the job.

Q3. What drew you to AIS initially? And how has AIS changed since?

Apart from my first job, I have always worked with local companies, so when I got an offer to return to an MNC, I was really excited. Despite changes in the company branding, the people I work with and the projects have stayed pretty much the same. The new management is surely bringing in changes, and I can see the effort towards employee inclusion and improvement. One such initiative that stands out to me is the AIS Academy MasterClasses. Having industry experts sharing their knowledge via in-house training is rare. These classes are informative and helpful for career progression and self-development.

Q4. What are some of the challenges you faced while working at AIS, and how have you handled them?

Every project has its fair share of challenges – whether it’s managing diverse stakeholders with varying expectations or working under tight deadlines. I see these challenges as opportunities for growth. These moments test my ability to stay adaptable and resourceful. Each obstacle has helped me refine my problem-solving skills, strengthen communication with my team, and develop strategies that ensure we stay on track.

Q5. What do you like most about AIS?

I appreciate the work culture at AIS, which stands out from the other firms I’ve worked with. I have been fortunate to have exceptional team leaders at AIS who are not only approachable but also incredibly supportive. The trust they have shown in my capability to deliver has been empowering. Additionally, I have had the opportunity to connect with colleagues across different teams – the Project Management team, Cost Management or Corporate Function teams – through various events. The CSR initiatives organised by AIS are something I particularly look forward to, as they highlight our strong team spirit and sense of community.

I am also grateful for the hybrid working model we follow, which provides a wonderful level of flexibility and work-life balance.

Q6. Which benefits are your favourite and why?

My favourite would be the hybrid working model. On the days I work from home, I save a significant amount of time commuting and getting ready, which allows me to either take care of personal errands or dedicate extra time to office tasks. On other days, I am either in the office or on-site, interacting with colleagues and the project team, which is equally important for my professional and personal growth. This flexibility helps me maintain a healthy work-life dynamic while benefiting from remote and in-person environments.

Q7. How have you grown professionally while at AIS?

The role of a project manager at AIS was quite new and challenging to me initially, as I had previously worked as a Structural Engineer. However, with the support and encouragement from my line managers and team, the journey has been smooth and rewarding. I have learned quite a lot from their guidance and the MasterClasses offered by the AIS Academy, which have helped me grow professionally and personally.

My background in the Building & Construction industry also made the transition easier. The professional memberships offered by AIS have been invaluable in expanding my network and enhancing my skills through various certifications and courses.

I frequently take part in the CSR initiatives at AIS and the AIS-YPC team. I feel grateful for the opportunity to give back to the community.

Q8. Describe your hobby.

I enjoy pursuing a wide range of activities outside of work. My hobbies evolve as I continually explore new interests. I am currently learning Indian classical dance and have the opportunity to perform at various stages. In addition to dance, I love painting, crafting, baking, and stitching, among other creative pursuits.

Q9. How do you balance your career at AIS and your family?

I must say that I have found a good balance between my professional and personal life, thanks to the support from my team at AIS and my family. While I sometimes need extra hours to meet deadlines, I also have days that I complete my tasks ahead of schedule. The hybrid work model helps a lot in allowing me to prioritise my commitments effectively and ensuring I can dedicate time to both work and personal life.

Q10. What advice do you have for prospective AIS candidates?

AIS is filled with warm, welcoming individuals and an inclusive culture. One can expect professional and personal growth as an employee here. As different individuals have varying perspectives on what constitutes an ideal workplace, I would encourage prospective candidates to explore AIS’ website and social media channels to learn more about who we are and what we offer.
