Q1. Could you share your journey from application development to your current role as Technical Director in the Digital Technology Team at AIS, and how this experience has shaped your perspective on digital transformation?
My journey has been transformative. Initially, my focus was on the technical aspects — asking “Can we build it?” Over time, I learned to balance engineering rigour with business outcomes, shifting my perspective to “Should we build it?” and considering how it will scale, integrate, and deliver value.
As the Technical Director for the Digital Technology Team at AIS, I concentrate on developing pragmatic digital roadmaps, aligning stakeholders, and minimising risks at both the architecture and data layers. My goal is to turn AI and ML initiatives from pilot projects into robust production platforms. This journey has reinforced my belief that successful digital transformation goes beyond mere technology delivery; it requires disciplined change management, measurable impact, and continuous feedback loops among product, data, and operations.
Q2. As the Technical Director for the Digital Technology Team, what are your primary responsibilities at AIS, and how do they align with the company’s goals?
My primary responsibilities include leading our R&D efforts in digital technology, setting clear roadmaps and technical direction, overseeing project delivery, and managing the end-to-end AI pipeline, from use-case discovery to production ML operations.
I also cultivate key client relationships to ensure our solutions align with measurable outcomes while upholding strong business values. This approach directly supports AIS’ commitment to delivering client impact and operational excellence by transforming insights into actionable, secure, and governed production-grade solutions.
Q3. What strategies do you employ to manage complex projects, such as the Digital Twins application, ensuring they are both technically sound and aligned with business objectives?
To manage complex projects, I employ an outcome-first, platform-driven strategy, ensuring that the solution remains technically sound and continuously aligned with measurable business outcomes:
- Co-Defining Goals: I work closely with stakeholders to define business goals and KPIs, ensuring alignment from the outset.
- Structured Discovery: I conduct structured discovery sessions that include process mapping, data profiling, and developing a canonical schema to shape the project scope effectively.
- Building an Architecture Runway: I establish an architecture runway that includes continuous integration and deployment, observability, pipelines, and guardrails to prevent one-off solutions.
- Incremental Delivery: Using a dual-track agile approach, I deliver the project incrementally, with demo-able milestones tied to KPIs and a risk burndown.
- Operational Safety: I ensure operational safety through human-in-the-loop controls and clear rollback procedures, which help maintain the technical integrity of the solution while keeping it governable.
Q4. Can you share an example of a successful project you’ve managed that showcases the impact of digitalisation within the industry?
I designed and developed a digital transformation platform that enables multiple 3D simulations, featuring clear visual dashboards and guided workflows. This helped project teams make faster, evidence-based decisions during design and construction phases.
I also managed a large-scale monitoring program that detected issues early and predicted errors before they could impact operations. For our clients, this translated into fewer site disruptions, reduced rework, and stronger delivery confidence. These outcomes show how digitalisation, when tied to engineering workflows, directly improves safety, reliability, and speed in construction projects.
Q5. Can you provide examples of how research and development focused on business needs has led to innovative solutions for both the team and clients?
Our R&D efforts, closely aligned with business needs, have resulted in many exciting innovations. For instance, we developed a Digital Twin for live monitoring and simulations, allowing for real-time data visualisation that enhances decision-making and project management.
Another example is our Agentic RPA with human-in-the-loop, which automates routine tasks like generating reports and checking designs, freeing engineers to focus on complex problem-solving while ensuring accuracy.
We explored LiDAR applications, combined with Gaussian Splitting for better point cloud visualisation and reliable site supervision, and a CV/VLM pipeline to automate visual checks for 4S. We also leveraged GenAI for faster document and design drafts, along with LLM-driven ideation. Each of these innovations strengthens productivity, reduces errors, and enhances project delivery across Information Technology (IT) and Operational Technology (OT).
Q6. What emerging trends do you believe will have the most significant impact on the construction industry in the next few years?
Several emerging trends are poised to transform the construction industry. The integration of production-grade AI agents will enhance core workflows with built-in governance features, ensuring efficient approvals and compliance through audit trails and policy guardrails. Robotics will evolve from performing isolated tasks to managing coordinated, semi-autonomous operations on-site, improving safety and productivity. Furthermore, the development of robust industrial data backbones will enable standardised schemas and scalable IoT solutions, providing continuous observability for data-driven decision-making throughout the construction lifecycle. These advancements will significantly enhance efficiency and project outcomes across the industry.
Q7. With the rapid pace of technological advancement, how do you stay updated on the latest trends in your field?
I employ a proactive approach to stay updated with technological advancements. I remain close to the work and the market by tracking industry news and research, observing market signals, and understanding client roadmaps. I actively listen for emerging pain points in the field and run lightweight internal experiments and prototypes to test new ideas. Sharing learnings across teams and benchmarking against credible sources and communities further enhances my knowledge. Most importantly, I maintain a builder’s mindset — a bias toward automating day-to-day operations, ensuring that trends are validated through hands-on trials rather than just headlines.
Q8. Looking ahead, what are your personal goals in the realm of digital transformation?
Looking ahead, my goal is to advance toward autonomous operations by developing agentic systems capable of generating and orchestrating specialised expert agents for end-to-end needs. Crucially, I aim to ensure that humans remain in control through oversight, approvals, and audit trails. My vision is a more “0101” world: fully digitalised, controllable, explainable, and measurable, where transparency reduces errors and prevents misconduct.
Q9. With your expertise in areas like RPA and digital twins, how do you see these technologies shaping the future of the engineering and construction sectors?
RPA and Digital Twins are set to transform the engineering and construction sectors by making them more predictive, automated, and safe. Digital Twins are evolving from mere visualisation to closed-loop operations, enabling live monitoring, what-if simulations, and optimisation that guide scheduling, logistics, and maintenance. Meanwhile, RPA will serve as the foundation for AI agents in workflow automation. When combined with AI (AI RPA), it can efficiently handle high-volume tasks such as design reviews, approvals, procurement, and site reporting, all while maintaining human oversight. Together, these technologies will compress cycle times, reduce rework and downtime, enhance safety and compliance, and shift teams from reactive firefighting to proactive, data-driven delivery.
Q10. What activities or experiences do you find most fulfilling outside of work, and how do they help you recharge?
I prioritise unplugging to recharge, keeping electronics away to reconnect with real life. Spending time with my pet and enjoying good stories or movies provides me with genuine feelings and perspective. This focus on work-life balance enriches my life outside of work. Taking time to pause sharpens my judgment, allowing me to return with clearer priorities and improved decision-making abilities.
