Q1. Can you describe your experience in the Engineering Innovation team? What are some of your key responsibilities?
My experience in the Engineering Innovation team has been both immensely rewarding and enjoyable. When I joined, I had limited practical experience, but the supportive environment allowed me to quickly enhance my skills.
I’ve had the opportunity to actively contribute to a variety of projects, primarily focusing on structural design and analysis. This hands-on involvement has not only accelerated my technical growth but also deepened my understanding of how innovative engineering solutions can address real-world challenges.
Q2. In what ways does adopting Modular Integrated Construction (MiC) enhance cost-effectiveness and efficiency within the construction process?
First, the factory-based production model ensures a high level of precision, which minimises material waste and reduces the need for rework. In controlled environments, variables such as weather are mitigated, leading to consistent quality and fewer disruptions. This not only saves costs associated with delays but also enhances the overall durability and performance of the structures.
Second, MiC streamlines on-site operations by simplifying logistics and expediting the installation process. With modular components pre-manufactured off-site, the assembly on-site requires fewer workers and less time, leading to significant labour cost savings and quicker project delivery. This efficient approach not only accelerates timelines but also allows for better resource allocation, enabling teams to focus on other critical aspects of the project.
Q3. What challenges do you see in advocating for a shift from traditional construction practices to modern modular techniques?
The core challenges revolve around industry acceptance and operational complexity.
First, fostering acceptance among stakeholders — including designers, contractors, and regulators, requires a significant mindset shift. Many individuals may resist adopting modular workflows due to their unfamiliarity with the processes involved. Overcoming this inertia demands comprehensive education and outreach to demonstrate the benefits and reliability of modular construction.
Second, the precision required for effective coordination in manufacturing and transportation introduces complexities that necessitate new partnerships within the supply chain. Establishing these relationships can be challenging, as traditional supply chains may not be equipped to handle the unique demands of modular construction.
Additionally, the design rigidity inherent in modular projects poses its challenges. Late-stage changes are often limited, which underscores the importance of meticulous upfront planning. This necessity for thorough preparation can be daunting, as any oversight may result in costly revisions and inefficiencies down the line.
Q4. Can you share an example of a project where you and the team successfully integrated innovative technologies to improve outcomes?
One notable project where our team successfully integrated innovative technologies involved a hybrid approach combining MiC and cast-in-situ techniques. We engineered a novel connector designed to harmonise these two construction methods, which played a crucial role in the project’s success.
This innovative connector facilitates precise lifting and positioning of the MiC modules while ensuring seamless structural integration with the cast elements. By effectively bridging the efficiency of modular construction with the adaptability of cast-in-situ techniques, our solution not only accelerated the sequencing of construction activities but also enhanced the overall structural synergy.
Q5. How has your experience with AI during your studies influenced your approach to engineering innovation or digital transformation at AIS?
My academic exposure to technologies like AI and AR has profoundly reshaped my approach to engineering innovation and digital transformation. It has instilled in me a proactive mindset to explore how emerging digital tools — ranging from predictive analytics to immersive visualisation can optimise processes and address industry challenges.
This experience encourages me to stay continuously informed about technological advancements, enabling me to identify opportunities for digital transformation that can lead to enhanced precision, efficiency, and sustainability beyond conventional methods. I am particularly motivated to leverage these technologies to develop innovative solutions that not only streamline operations but also contribute to a more sustainable future in the field of engineering.
Q6. How do you see technologies like Generative AI, BIM and RPA transforming structural design and construction practices?
I see them as still evolving, with immense potential yet to be fully realised in the structural design and construction sectors. While BIM is already demonstrating its value in current projects by enhancing collaboration and visualisation, we have yet to see it fundamentally reshape the core industry model.
However, I remain optimistic about the future. As these technologies mature and integrate more seamlessly, they hold the promise to unlock greater efficiency, precision, and smarter decision-making throughout the entire design and construction lifecycle.
I am excited to learn, adapt, and actively contribute to this ongoing evolution, as I believe it will redefine how we build and ultimately lead to more innovative, sustainable, and efficient construction practices.
Q7. How do you stay updated on the latest trends in engineering, especially in relation to innovation and technology?
I prioritise continuous learning through a combination of industry sources and hands-on exploration. I regularly study publications and research papers to stay informed about the applications and advancements of emerging engineering tools. Additionally, I actively participate in upskilling opportunities, such as our company’s technical seminars.
Beyond theoretical knowledge, I experiment with open-source tools, such as testing Rhino plugins, to assess their practical limitations. This integration of academic insight and applied testing ensures that my understanding remains grounded in real-world engineering contexts, enabling me to leverage new technologies in my work effectively.
Q8. As a young professional, what role do you believe emerging technologies will play in shaping the future of the construction industry?
I view emerging technologies as essential catalysts for sustainable evolution in the construction industry. While adoption remains gradual, these technologies will fundamentally address our industry’s core challenges, including safety, efficiency, and resource constraints. For instance, I’ve observed how neural networks can detect and analyze structural cracks with unprecedented accuracy, while AR simulations can optimize on-site operations even before construction begins.
I see these tools not as replacements for human expertise, but as force multipliers that empower us to build smarter, faster, and more responsibly. My focus is on bridging this potential with practical execution, learning to apply technologies in ways that deliver concrete value on the ground.
Q9. Outside of your professional interests, what hobbies or activities do you engage in that help you maintain a balance while working in such a fast-changing field?
Traveling and photography are my anchors outside of work. Exploring new places allows me to disconnect and recharge, while capturing moments through my lens sharpens my attention to detail and enhances my creative perspective. These activities do not just relieve stress; they refresh my mindset, enabling me to approach complex engineering challenges with renewed clarity and energy.
Q10. What are your personal and professional goals for the future in engineering?
My immediate focus is on consolidating my technical expertise through hands-on projects, with the goal of obtaining my professional engineering license within the next few years. Long-term, I aspire to become a well-rounded civil engineer who bridges foundational knowledge with emerging technologies, proactively contributing to their real-world adoption in projects. Ultimately, I aim to drive innovation that delivers tangible value, including safer structures, more efficient processes, and improved communities.
