Interview with Fung Kwan Yee, Graduate Engineer

Q1. What sparked your interest in engineering, and specifically in the buildings and MEP field?

To me, engineering is the perfect blend of art and science. My passion for it was ignited by the fascinating intersection of creativity and analytical thinking that engineering embodies. It is more than just numbers and formulas; it’s a way to transform innovative ideas into tangible realities that improve our daily lives.

The buildings and MEP field particularly captivate me because they are both practical and impactful. The idea that I can contribute to creating environments that enhance people’s lives and promote sustainability is incredibly motivating.

Q2. Could you tell us about your background and journey that led you to the AIS family?

I graduated from the University of Hong Kong in 2023, where I earned my degree in engineering. During my time at university, I had the opportunity to explore various facets of engineering through internships and projects, which solidified my passion for the buildings and MEP field.

My journey to AIS began with the search for a dynamic and innovative company that aligns with my commitment to excellence and sustainability. AIS stood out to me for its collaborative culture, which fosters both growth and continuous learning. Joining the AIS family right after graduation felt like the perfect fit, allowing me to contribute my skills while continuing to develop as a professional in an inspiring environment.

Q3. What is the day-to-day of your role like?

As a graduate engineer, my day-to-day responsibilities are both diverse and engaging. I work closely with my senior colleagues on a variety of projects, which provides me with invaluable learning experiences. My primary tasks include drafting structural design drawings and performing calculations for project submissions, ensuring that our designs meet both regulatory standards and client expectations.

Each day begins with a check-in with my seniors to update them on my progress and discuss the next steps. Their feedback is crucial as it helps me refine my skills and approach. I appreciate the collaborative environment at AIS, where I can ask questions and learn from different expertise. This continuous interaction not only enhances my technical knowledge but also fosters a sense of teamwork that I find incredibly motivating. Overall, I’m excited to contribute to projects that have a real impact on our communities while growing as an engineer.

Q4. What has been the most challenging or rewarding project you’ve worked on so far?

While I’m still early in my career and haven’t had the chance to work on a large number of projects yet, each one has offered unique challenges and rewarding experiences. I’ve particularly enjoyed collaborating on projects that require innovative problem-solving and teamwork.

I truly believe that every project, no matter the scale, provides valuable lessons. I’m grateful for the opportunity to learn from my colleagues and contribute to our collective success, and I look forward to taking on more challenging projects in the future.

Q5. What has been the biggest lesson or piece of advice you’ve learned since starting your career as a graduate engineer?

Good things take time. Quality engineering requires patience, attention to detail, and a commitment to continuous improvement.

In our fast-paced industry, it is easy to feel pressure to rush taskes to meet deadlines. However, I’ve come to realize that investing time and effort into each project is crucial for creating well-designed, sustainable solutions. Whether it’s refining a structural design or collaborating with my team, taking the time to ensure everything is done right ultimately leads to better outcomes and greater satisfaction.

Q6.  What do you enjoy most about working here?

What I enjoy most about working at AIS is the flexibility and the supportive community. The versatile and open working environment encourages collaboration and creativity, allowing diverse ideas to flourish.

I appreciate the culture of encouragement; it fosters a sense of belonging and inspires me to push my boundaries. Being surrounded by such passionate and innovative individuals makes every day rewarding. It’s truly a pleasure to be part of a community that values both professional development and personal connections, creating a positive atmosphere where we can all thrive together.

Q7. How do you stay up-to-date with the latest industry trends and technologies in your field, beyond just your day-to-day work responsibilities?

I actively seek out various resources that enrich my knowledge. I enjoy listening to engineering podcasts that feature discussions on innovative practices and emerging technologies, which provide valuable insights from industry leaders.

In addition to podcasts, I regularly read articles related to engineering advancements. This helps me understand new methodologies and best practices that I can apply to my work.

Attending webinars and industry conferences, when possible, is another great way for me to network and learn from peers. Staying engaged with these resources not only enhances my professional development but also fuels my passion for engineering and innovation.

Q8. Do you have any side pursuits that relate to your engineering expertise?

I enjoy photography and exercise, both of which complement my engineering expertise in meaningful ways. Through photography, I’ve developed a keen eye for detail and composition, skills that translate well into my work as an engineer. Capturing the intricate designs and structures around me allows me to appreciate the beauty in every piece of my life.

Exercise, on the other hand, helps me maintain focus and mental clarity. They provide a much-needed balance to my daily routine and allow me to approach challenges with a refreshed mindset. Together, these pursuits enrich my personal life and contribute to my professional growth in the engineering field.

Q9. What is something about you that might surprise your colleagues or that they may not know?

One thing that might surprise my colleagues is how much I love being outdoors and staying active in nature! Whether it’s hiking in the mountains, exploring the ocean, or simply going for a run, I find spending time outside rejuvenates my spirit and sparks my creativity.

My passion for the outdoors not only provides a refreshing break from the daily grind but also helps me appreciate the natural world around us—something that often informs my perspective on sustainable engineering practices. I believe that connecting with nature enhances my overall well-being and allows me to bring a fresh outlook to my work. It’s a great reminder of why we strive to create buildings and systems that harmonise with our environment.
