Interview with Crystal Lim, Senior Quantity Surveyor

Q1. Can you share a bit about your career journey?

I graduated from the Universiti of Sains, Malaysia, with a Bachelor of Science in Housing, Building and Planning (Quantity Surveying). Shortly after completing my studies, I secured a position as a quantity surveyor in Singapore. To date, I have accumulated more than 5 years of working experience as a quantity surveyor. Looking ahead, I am eager to continue growing professionally and aspire to make meaningful contributions to society through my career.

Q2. What are some of the most exciting projects you’ve worked on since joining the company?

One of the most exciting projects I’ve been involved in is the Proposed Fit Out Works for Element. I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute from the initial stages through to the post-contract phase. During the feasibility stage, our team worked closely with the Employer to develop cost plans. Once we had a clear understanding of the Employer’s budget, we suggested certain scopes that could be implemented as optional works or direct contract works, ensuring the project proceeded seamlessly.

Another mentionable project is the Proposed Sports and Recreation Development for Outward Bound Singapore. This has been a rewarding experience, as I had the chance to collaborate with a diverse team of project managers, contractors, and consultants, which made the entire process even more fulfilling.

Q3. How do you manage large, complex projects and ensure they stay on track?

To manage large, complex projects effectively, I focus on strong commitment, clear role definition, and seamless collaboration within the team. I make it an initiative to consistently report the project’s status to the line manager, ensuring the team is always aligned and informed. Whenever challenges arise, we hold ad hoc discussions to align on the necessary action steps. I believe that effective communication and staying organised are also key to ensuring that all aspects of the project are well-coordinated and on track.

Q4. What do you enjoy most about working at Asia Infrastructure Solution?

What I enjoy most about working at Asia Infrastructure Solution is the flexibility of work arrangements and the inclusive culture among colleagues. I also want to give credit to the Contract Advisory Group at AIS for providing insightful advice on contract matters.

Q5. What’s a piece of advice you’ve received that has stuck with you throughout your career?

Act with integrity. It’s a principle that guides my decisions and actions, ensuring that I maintain trust and professionalism in all my dealings, both with colleagues and clients. Integrity is the foundation of long-term success and meaningful relationships.

Q6. What is one thing you wish people knew about your job?

Quantity Surveyor is a versatile and all-encompassing profession – from cost estimation and budgeting to contract management and risk assessment. It requires a broad skill set and the ability to adapt to different challenges, making it both dynamic and rewarding.

Q7. How do you see the industry evolving, and how do you adapt to these changes?

I see the industry evolving with the increasing integration of technology and AI, which are transforming how we manage projects, from cost estimation to data analysis and decision-making. As these technologies continue to advance, I focus on staying updated with the latest tools and trends, ensuring I can leverage them effectively to improve efficiency, accuracy, and overall project outcomes. Adapting to these changes involves continuous learning and embracing new technologies to stay ahead in an ever-evolving industry.

Q8. How do you maintain a work-life balance while managing high-level responsibilities?

Maintaining a work-life balance is easier said than done. However, practice makes it better. I maintain a work-life balance by practising effective time management and prioritisation. I focus on completing tasks based on their urgency and importance, which helps me stay organised and reduce stress. I also make sure to take regular breaks and set boundaries to recharge, ensuring I remain productive while maintaining my well-being outside of work.

Q9. Describe your hobby.

One of my favourite hobbies is reading books in a wide range of genres, including National Geographic, romance, and philosophy. Reading is a wonderful way for me to relax, learn new things, and continue growing both personally and professionally. I believe books are silent teachers, offering valuable insights and perspectives. They help me regain a sense of calm and recharge, allowing me to approach life and work with a positive mindset.
