We are proud to celebrate one of our own – Andre C. Salim, Assistant Engineer at Asia Infrastructure Solutions, who is a key contributor to a newly published paper in Engineering Structures, a journal published by Elsevier. This article investigates how CFRP strengthening improves the fatigue performance of butt-welded high-strength steel plates (Q960, Q890, HG785) with surface cracks. Using experimental tests and finite element modelling, it shows that CFRP can significantly extend fatigue life, with effectiveness influenced by adhesive damage, initial crack size, and plate thickness. A fatigue life prediction model using Paris Law is also proposed.

Andre C. Salim

Assistant Engineer

Andre C. Salim is an Assistant Engineer at Asia Infrastructure Solutions in Hong Kong. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Harbin Institute of Technology and went on to pursue a master’s degree in Civil Engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. His master’s research focuses on advanced composite-steel hybrid structures, particularly the fatigue behaviour of steel structures and methods for strengthening them. His research findings were showcased at the Academic Conference on Composites for Infrastructure, held at Southern University of Science and Technology in Shenzhen. Additionally, he has published three academic journal papers in Ocean Engineering, Thin-Walled Structures, and Engineering Structures.
