About the Project
The project involved a major feasibility study commissioned by the Hong Kong Government, which a study team led by AIS carried out.
It was recommended that the next road crossing of Hong Kong Harbour should be between the new West Kowloon Reclamation and Sai Ying Pun in the Western District of Hong Kong Island, and be constructed to dual 3-lane capacity using the immersed tube method. The Study also concluded that the project was financially robust as a build-operate-transfer (BOT) project. Accordingly, the Hong Kong Government invited BOT bids from interested parties in 1992.
Our Role
Asia Infrastructure Solutions (AIS) was appointed by Nishimatsu-Kumagai, the contractors to the Western Harbour Tunnel Company Ltd. AIS worked in close cooperation with both contractors to prepare the tender designs for the immersed tube and cut-and-cover approach tunnels, drawing on and further developing techniques used by AIS for the Eastern Harbour Crossing.
