Project Description

UUSB Sdn Bhd plans to construct Cell 8 within their existing sanitary landfill in Kulai, Johor, as part of their long-term strategy to ensure sufficient waste disposal capacity for the region. The new cell is necessary to accommodate the increasing volume of solid waste resulting from population growth and ongoing development in Johor. This project will involve the construction of an engineered containment system, leachate management, and other supporting infrastructure to ensure safe, environmentally compliant waste disposal in line with regulatory standards and best practices.

Client Need

To meet the growing demand for waste disposal, UUSB Sdn Bhd needs to construct Cell 8 to ensure the landfill can continue operating smoothly and safely. The existing cells are reaching their capacity, and without Cell 8, there is a risk of disruption to landfill operations. The new cell must be designed and built in line with environmental regulations and engineering best practices, with proper containment, leachate management, and gas control systems to protect the surrounding environment.

Our Solutions

The proposed solutions include the installation of main leachate collection pipes to safely channel leachate to the treatment system and prevent contamination. A Geosynthetic Clay Liner (GCL) will be used as a separator layer to act as a reliable barrier, preventing leachate from seeping into the underlying soil. In addition, a gas control system will be provided to capture and manage landfill gases, reducing environmental risks and ensuring the landfill operates safely and in compliance with regulations.

Outcomes & Benefits

Once completed, the proposed solutions for Cell 8 are expected to provide long-term environmental protection and safe landfill operations. The leachate collection system, GCL separator, and gas control measures are designed to minimize the risk of groundwater contamination, prevent gas emissions, and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements. These measures will help extend the landfill’s operational life while supporting the region’s growing waste management needs in a controlled and environmentally responsible manner.

Our Practices & Lesson Learnt

The design of Cell 8 reflects best practices commonly applied in modern sanitary landfill development, including the use of engineered liners such as GCL, proper leachate collection systems, and gas control measures to minimise environmental impact. Early planning and integration of these systems help reduce construction risks and ensure long-term functionality. A key potential lesson learned is the importance of close coordination between design, construction, and operational teams to ensure that the systems perform as intended once commissioned. Ongoing monitoring during construction will also be critical to identifying and addressing any unforeseen challenges early.
