About the Project

The Malaysian Government has initiated a significant railway expansion project, extending the electrified double-track railway from Ipoh to Padang Besar in Peninsular Malaysia along the old railway line, covering a total distance of 350km. Package N7 and N8, represent approximately 60 km of railway alignment, mainly from Ipoh to Padang Rengas.

Client Need

The client required geotechnical engineering expertise for the foundation of various structures such as the stations, and bridge approaches, slope remedial and strengthening designs of various cut slopes, retaining wall designs, and ground improvement designs for the entire railways.

Our Solutions

Asia Infrastructure Solutions (AIS) implemented various cost-efficient ground improvement designs such as removal and replacement methods, stone columns with surcharge, high-strength geotextiles, and piled embankments near bridge approaches. We also provided valuable technical guidance and maintained dedicated site supervision throughout the entire project duration.

Best Practices

AIS worked directly under the design-and-build Contractor, which allowed us to be more creative in our approach and resulted in a more cost-efficient design. Confronted with diverse Limestone Formations during construction, we adeptly formulated contingency plans, minimising risks and enhancing overall railway safety.
